I was born and raised in Massachusetts. Here I am with my brother Mark.
He liked math, I did not. In school I would stare at the problems on the
page and feel anxious about solving them. My homework and test papers
were always filled with eraser holes. I wasnt much different from
the many students I meet today in elementary classrooms. They tell me
that learning math can at times be difficult and scary. Thats why
I feel so strongly about the Pigs Will Be Pigs Math Series. Ive
tried to show kids that math is not only fun, but is also a very important
part of our real lives.
What I liked most about my childhood was collecting dolls. Here I
am playing dolls with my favorite aunt. I saved all of my
dolls and still enjoy them as an adult.
I graduated from Brandeis University and went on to earn a Masters
Degree from Columbia University. It was during graduate school that I
met my husband Michael. We eventually settled in New York States
beautiful Hudson Valley, where we've made our home for the past twenty
five years.
When our two sons were small, I returned to college to study elementary
education.
I fell in love with the courses in childrens literature and decided
that writing for kids was exactly what I wanted to do. Pigs
Will Be Pigs, my first published book, was written after
a money hunting adventure I shared with my boys. In fact, all of the
titles in the Pigs Will Be Pigs Math Series are based on Axelrod
family escapades.
My husband and I are very proud of our sons, who are now practically
all grown. Even though they are doing exciting things like studying
chemistry in college and aspiring to be a filmmaker, they still love
to read their moms picture books.
